How to get a Toronto Public Library card: eligibility, ID and online options

Start with where you live, work or study, then choose the card that fits what you want to borrow. The online option has narrower eligibility.

A Toronto Public Library card is free for more people than Toronto residents alone. Studying or working in the city can also qualify you. However, that does not mean everybody who qualifies can complete the same online application. The full-service card and Digital Access Card follow different registration routes.

The most useful preparation is a three-part check: identify your eligibility, decide whether you need physical borrowing, and assemble the documents for that route. This guide separates those decisions so you can avoid arriving with only a student card when additional address evidence is needed, or applying online when an in-person visit is the appropriate option.
